two things in James Salter’s masterful “Am Strande von Tanger” made me get on the Google. once was to learn what a quatrefoil was (oh, I knew that!). and once was to satisfy my curiosity about the line, “Inge’s car is a blue Volkswagen, the blue of certain airmail envelopes.”

I don’t remember having seen Volkswagens in that light blue color before (I thought of the navy color interrupted by red around the edges of certain airmail envelopes).

perhaps more importantly, this is brilliant story from a brilliant collection, one chocolate brown copy of which I was lucky enough to find at the friends of the SFPL book sale this week.
