it was my pleasure to see the Francesca Woodman retrospective at SFMOMA yesterday. my friend and I pushed our noses almost onto the glass over the photos, trying to figure out how she had so thoroughly immersed herself into interiors. whole limbs disappeared into wallpaper, cabinetry and mirrors in the great series of self portraits taken as a student at RISD.
as a person in the (very very) preliminary stages of considering birch tree-related sleeve tattoos, Woodman’s shots from the MacDowell colony felt especially noteworthy. would that I could make artworks that so well represented my disappearance into them.
