the highlight of the SF Fine Print Fair at Fort Mason, aside from an obscure argument in the vestibule between a transsexual docent and a women trying to retrieve her checked bag, was Clifton Karhu.
Karhu is especially appealing because he’s a good Scandinavian Midwesterner (Minnesota Finn) who used religion (a Lutheran mission) to get to art (a mastery of Japanese woodblock printing). if I were juuuust a bit wealthier I would have walked away with his Hanamikoji Snow diptych, half of which is represented above. the other half continues the house and includes a break in the snowfall, making it even more compelling.
