I visited the Asian Art Museum this weekend not because of the Maharaja exhibition but because of the ads for the Maharaja exhibition. and even inside the building I found the work of Pixar animator Sanjay Patel much more arresting than the surprisingly diminutive objects from India. curators were wise to at least give Patel a separate space for his murals (an influx of color that is perhaps quite necessary).
the exception to my underwhelmedness would be the 30-foot-long company painting of a royal procession. a much richer Where’s Waldo illustration in opaque watercolor that I just have to call “vibrant.”
